A Yard, a Yard Crew, and a Stubborn Idea.
Illinois Boxes Recycle isn't a portal, a broker, or a marketplace. It's a 60,000-square-foot Rockford yard with bay doors, balers, refinishing tables, and people who can grade a gaylord box from across the room. We started small in 2014, around the conviction that industrial cardboard deserved more than one ride.
About, expanded.
The About section is split into three deeper reads. Pick the one that fits what you're trying to understand about us.
How a forgotten corner of an auto-parts warehouse became the busiest gaylord refinery in northern Illinois.
Read the timeline →The targets, the math, the audits. Why we publish our diversion rate and what it would take for us to ever stop.
Read the pledge →Who's in the yard, who's in dispatch, and the four house rules every new hire memorizes day one.
Meet the crew →Cardboard deserves more than one trip.
We started Illinois Boxes Recycle in 2014 with a single conviction: industrial cardboard is too useful to be a single-use product. Every gaylord that gets baled after one trip represents a manufactured object — pulped, formed, shipped, used — being thrown away before it had even stretched its legs.
Our entire business model is built around extending the service life of cardboard. We buy it, grade it, sometimes refurbish it, and route it back into the next factory that needs it. We recycle what genuinely can't be reused. We do neither of those things halfway.
If you've ever been frustrated by a packaging vendor that treated sustainability as a marketing claim instead of a business model, this is the difference. The math is our business.
A decade of operating, in nine numbers.
Who we work with — and what those memberships mean.
Member since 2017. We use AICC's technical resources for spec verification on custom triple-wall builds. Their annual technical conferences are required attendance for our refinishing supervisor.
Member since 2019. ISRI sets the standards for OCC bale grading and chain-of-custody documentation we use on every recycle stream that leaves our yard.
We send recycle bales to three certified North American mills under named agreements. We rotate volumes based on mill capacity and freight efficiency. No overseas exports. Ever.
Member since 2016. Active in regional manufacturing initiatives, including a 2022 grant program that helped four small Rockford manufacturers transition to reused packaging.
Founding member in 2020. We share diversion data, refurbishing techniques, and case studies with seven other Midwest companies working on circular packaging.
Member since 2018. We host an annual yard tour for IMA members and our refinishing line has been on the IMA member case-study list since 2022.
Quiet recognition we appreciate.

None of these awards changed how we run the yard. We mention them because customers sometimes ask, and because they signal that the work has been seen by people whose opinion we respect.
What you can expect when you work with us.
Most inbound requests get a quote inside one business day, and a pickup or shipment scheduled within five.
We grade boxes the way a buyer would — not the way a seller would. The grade on your invoice matches the box on your dock.
Routed pickups across IL, WI, IA, IN, and MI, plus carrier partnerships for the rest of the lower 48.
When you call us, you reach the yard. No call center, no overseas routing, no upsell scripts.
We staff a refinishing line — not a warehouse with a tape gun. Bent flaps, torn liners, busted corners: we fix them.
Bills of lading, weight tickets, EPA-aligned chain of custody. Audit-ready, every haul.
